Chairman Mike Wheeler (left) gives members of the automotive supply chain a tour of Truckman’s hardtop production facility.Truckman, the West Midlands-based 4×4 vehicle accessory manufacturer and distributor, hosted a round table discussion for businesses from the region as part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy consultation.

Hosted at Truckman’s Dudley-based headquarters in partnership with Drive Midlands, the meeting focused on the role of the automotive sector and the importance of delivering a strategy that supports the ambitions and investments of West Midlands’ businesses.

The event was attended by a group of automotive industry executives and business owners from across the Midlands who discussed key issues such as skills, devolution and business investment.

It formed part of the consultation process unveiled by Business Secretary Greg Clark in January, for which the Government is keen to engage with businesses and gather views and opinions on the future of UK industry. The content of the discussions will be sent to the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy as part of a larger automotive sector submission from Drive Midlands.

The Industrial Strategy is based on ten pillars for growth, including investing in science, research and innovation, upgrading infrastructure, delivering affordable energy and green growth, and encouraging trade and inward investment.

Mike Wheeler, Chairman of Truckman, said: “The automotive sector has a significant and vital role to play in the future of UK industry and this meeting will have been a valuable part of the Government’s industrial strategy. The sector is continually evolving and features companies that are making an important contribution to the UK economy through the development of technologies, the application of skills and the delivery of world-class products.

“We were very pleased to host this event, which highlighted some important ideas that would support businesses in the automotive sector, particularly in the supply chain, which makes a significant contribution to the economy through innovation, job creation and investment.”
