SCDI Comment On Virgin Atlantic’s ‘Little Red’ Announcement…
Following Virgin Atlantic’s announcement today (6 October 2014) of its intention to cease its ‘Little Red’ operation next year – ending its flights between London Heathrow and Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports from September 2015:
Ross Martin, Chief Executive, SCDI, said; “There was always a concern about the future of these services once the restrictions on how the slots could be used were lifted and it is disappointing news, especially for Edinburgh and Aberdeen, that they are indeed to end.
“While Scottish airports have been making good progress in attracting new routes, this is a blow to Scotland’s connectivity and there is a need now to focus on how our links to, and through, London and directly to international markets can be maintained and
“We hope that when the Airports Commission makes its recommendations on additional airport capacity, that steps will be taken to protect regional air access into the UK’s hub airport in London, to prevent the continual deterioration of domestic routes.”
SCDI are delivering an Aviation Conference on the theme of ‘Scotland’s Connectivity’ on 12 November 2014 in Glasgow, with speakers including, amongst others, the Chief Executives of both Heathrow and Gatwick airports, airlines and Scottish aviation leaders.
