Protolabs enhances its direct metal laser sintering offering by adding new materials to its range…

Submitted by on February 6, 2019 – 8:00 am |

Machines (L)Protolabs has announced the inclusion of Inconel 718 and Maraging Steel 1.2709 to its growing list of Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) materials.

These additions to the firm’s stock reinforces its reputation among product developers for holding a highly impressive range of metals available for rapid prototyping and functional end-use parts with complex geometries.

Introducing Inconel 718

As a nickel-based heat resistant alloy, Inconel 718 is high strength, corrosion resistant and can be used at temperatures between -252°C and 704°C. Its high-temperature strength is derived from its ability to create a thick, stable passivating oxide layer at high temperatures, protecting the material from further attack.

Inconel, which has good tensile, fatigue, creep and rupture strength, is ideal for aerospace and heavy industries in the production of jet engines, rocket engine components, gas turbine parts, instrumentation parts, power and process parts and related equipment exposed to extreme environments.

Geometric limits:

  • Min. wall thickness: 1.00mm; Min. feature size 1.00mm
  • Min. embossed details: 0.5mm high and wide; 0.8mm for text and images
  • Min. engraved details: 0.5mm deep and 0.6mm wide; 1.0mm wide for text and images
  • Max. part size: 245x245x300mm

Introducing Maraging Steel 1.2709

Maraging Steel 1.2709 is a pre-alloyed ultra-high strength steel in fine powder form. It has very good mechanical properties and is easily heat-treatable using a simple thermal age-hardening process to obtain.

Maraging Steel 1.2709, which offers high strength, high hardness and high-temperature resistance, can be used for tooling applications and for high performance industrial and engineering parts for use in aerospace and motor racing.

Geometric limits:

  • Min. wall thickness: 1.00mm; Min. feature size 1.00mm
  • Min. embossed details: 0.5mm high and wide; 0.8mm for text and images
  • Min. engraved details: 0.5mm deep and 0.6mm wide; 1.0mm wide for text and images

Protolabs’ growing range of metals available for its DMLS service includes Aluminium, 316 Stainless Steel, Titanium and the recently added Inconel 718 and Maraging Steel 1.2709.
