New sports management company helps keep it in the family…
A SOLIHULL lawyer has launched a sports management company that allows family members and more trusted advisers to act as bona fide agents for their sporting protégés.
S2 Sports Management (S²SM) provides an ‘umbrella service’ to individuals who would like to assume the role of agent – but without tying the advisor (or the sports star they represent) into any onerous and lengthy contracts.
This new-style sporting agency is the brainchild of Stuart Southall from Balsall Common and is facilitated through his niche commercial law firm Southall Hathaway & Co LLP. Apart from being an experienced litigator and accredited mediator, Stuart is also an expert in sports law.
As an approved FA Intermediary he is able to represent players or clubs (whatever the level) and assist with transfers, contract negotiations, intellectual property and image rights agreements, torts, or if necessary assist in resolving any dispute that may exist. Unlike the restrictive model of a traditional agent, both agent and player can also utilise the S²SM legal services on an ad hoc basis, plus it operates on a transparent, fixed cost model.
Mr Southall explains: ”We’re different because it’s non-contractual and undertaken on a case by case basis – and is all about returning control to the new advisor or player. Working with us also overcomes the issue of legitimacy, which is especially important when dealing with minors as clubs won’t deal with agents or representatives that aren’t FA licensed in some way.
“Ultimately though, the players will sign with the person now acting as their agent and not with us – we simply provide the vehicle for them to do business and be in control of their sporting destinies – but our specific provision of care certainly enables both parties to be better off financially and let them look after their own affairs.”
One of the first beneficiaries is former automotive industry worker Daniel Abraham from Edgbaston, who is cousin and now advisor to Bright Enobakhare, a flying winger on the books of Wolverhampton Wanders FC. Daniel says: “Bright wanted someone closer to home who had his best interests at heart, plus I’m also being asked by a few other young players to look after them, but wasn’t sure I could do all they were asking and didn’t want to let them down or embarrass myself. S²SM give me the legal and professional support I need to be confident and legitimate in all areas of being their agent – and with the added bonus I’m free to use their services as and when needed.”
S2SM also has consultants that provide access to clubs in the UK, Spain and Spanish speaking countries – and can expertly open doors. Local brothers Garry and Keith Thompson are highly respected ex-pro footballers with a wealth of knowledge and unrivalled contacts in the game.
Centre forward Garry from Erdington is an Aston Villa and West Brom legend, while winger Keith made his name at Coventry City before playing and settling abroad. They have structured and completed many deals on behalf of both players and clubs globally and are firm advocates of the caring and sharing S2SM ethos – understanding just how important the right advice and support can be and how S2SM could have really benefited them in their playing days.
Additionally, S2SM offers commercial opportunities and media support via former double Olympian and 400m world champion Daniel Caines from Birmingham – who has brokered endorsement and branding deals for many household sporting and entertainment stars. An accountancy and wealth management service is also available.
