New associate pro vice-chancellor joins university as global partnerships flourish…

Submitted by on May 29, 2014 – 6:15 am |

Coventry UniversityCoventry University has appointed a new associate pro vice-chancellor for international development as part of the institution’s ambitious plans to grow its global engagement agenda.

John Quirk, who started in the last week, also becomes director of the University’s Academic Partnership Unit and brings with him a wealth of experience of internationalisation in higher education from his previous role as director of international affairs for the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

Coventry University’s international activities have grown substantially over the past five years, culminating in a number of major developments during the past twelve months including in Turkey and China.

The landmark signing of a long-term partnership with Turkey’s Kadir Has University in March saw five new dual-award postgraduate programmes – including an MBA in oil and gas management and an MA in international relations – approved by both parties for delivery at the institution’s Istanbul campus.

Mr Quirk’s appointment comes as the University also embarks on a collaboration with the South West University of Political Science and Law (SWUPL) in Chongqing, China, to deliver programmes in law and business.

Mr Quirk has been director of international affairs at UCLan for six years, during which time he oversaw the development and delivery of the University’s wide-ranging internationalisation strategy. Prior to this he was director of the International Office at the University of Liverpool.

He said:

“I am delighted to be joining Coventry University at time when it is investing further in its international operations to deliver an ambitious new strategy, and I’m looking forward to contributing to grow its global presence.”

Dr David Pilsbury, pro vice-chancellor for international development, said:

“We are delighted to have attracted such an experienced individual who has been directly involved in internationalisation activities in the UK and overseas for many years. Our commitment to be a leading internationalised university will benefit greatly from his energy and imagination.”
