Missed Opportunity On Opt-Out Scheme For Competition Private Actions – CBI…

Submitted by on December 23, 2013 – 8:30 am |

Katja Hall, CBI Chief Policy Director - Missed Opportunity On Opt-Out Scheme For Competition Private ActionsThe CBI commented on the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee’s report on the Government’s draft Consumer Rights Bill.

Katja Hall, CBI Chief Policy Director, said:

“Although this report brings clarity to several areas of the draft Bill, including on contract terms and digital rights, it was a missed opportunity to challenge the Government’s proposals for an opt-out scheme for competition private actions.

“Lumping potential claimants together in US-style collective actions will fuel a litigation culture in the UK.

“Victims of competition law breaches must be swiftly compensated but there are better ways to do this than resorting to litigation, like using alternative dispute resolution. Current plans amount to gold-plating EU proposals in a way that will increase costs without delivering effective redress.”
