Independents Recognised At Kings Heath Business Excellence Awards…
Created to recognise outstanding quality and customer service, the Business Excellence Awards held at the Hare & Hounds pub last night, highlights the success and contribution that individuals and businesses make to Kings Heath as a bustling destination.
It was the independent businesses that stole the show, picking up the majority of the awards, although major high street names were also recognised – Sainsbury’s took home Gold for best chain closely followed by Loco Lounge and Costa.
More than 700 votes were cast online throughout November and December, with more than 150 people attending the annual event at the Hare & Hounds – which incidentally picked up the award for best night out.
The award for best new addition went to I Had One of Those, an independent that recently opened on Kings Heath high-street. They were a fantastic example to retail newcomers, taking home that’s so Kings Heath and best independent award also! Sylhet Spice were recognised asbest for a bite to eat, closely followed by Cherry Reds.
Sylhet Spice won gold for service with a smile, and Hedshed were awarded bronze. Winspers Florist, Julias Scissors, 99p Stores and People were among the other independents that took home awards.
The event is organised by the Kings Heath Business Improvement District (BID) and the awards were presented by Chairman of the BID Neville Summerfield.
There was also a special award for Kings Heath business champion. This award was dedicated to the late Catherine Edwards, known as Cathy to friends and family.
Kate Smart, Town Centre Manager said: “Sadly, Cathy passed away last year from pancreatic cancer. She was an enterprising businesswoman who put her everything into improving Kings Heath’s retail sector.
“She played an instrumental role in setting up the Kings Heath Business Improvement District in 2008 and was latterly elected Chair. This award goes to Cathy, recognising her dedication and commitment to Kings Heath.”
The Kings Heath Business Excellence Awards is now in its fourth year and winners were decided by votes from shoppers and local residents. The ceremony marks the end of a successful 2013 for Kings Heath.
