HS2 top of agenda for House of Commons visit…

Submitted by on November 6, 2015 – 7:30 am |

Jonathan Mitchell, President of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce04-Nov-2015 – Bringing HS2 trains to North Staffordshire will be top of the agenda when businesses meet with three senior ministers at the House of Commons today.

Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce is meeting Business, Innovation and Skills Secretary Sajid Javid, HS2 minister Robert Goodwill, and Treasury Minister David Gauke to raise key issues impacting on businesses. The event is being hosted by Stafford MP, Jeremy Lefroy and involves business leaders from across North Staffordshire.

Jonathan Mitchell, President of the Chamber said: “If the government can do just one thing to boost the economy of Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire, it is to bring HS2 trains to the city. A new solution is on the table that will allow Stafford, Stoke and Crewe to have direct HS2 trains, resulting in £5 billion of economic growth for Stoke-on-Trent over the next 60 years and an impressive return on investment for the taxpayer. For us, this means new infrastructure, more business investment, jobs, skills, health and better opportunities for people is this region.

“The evidence I’ve seen proves that connecting Stoke-on-Trent to HS2 will pay for itself many times over. Conversely, top economists tell us that a ‘Crewe only’ approach would cause the Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire economy to shrink by £4.1 billion over the same 60 years. We can’t let that happen”.
