College apprentice lays foundations for a successful future…

Submitted by on March 20, 2015 – 6:10 am |

Stratford-upon-Avon CollegeStratford-upon-Avon College apprentice Luke Fancini was congratulated by local MP Nadhim Zahawi upon completion of his work at St Gregory’s Primary School in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Bricklaying apprentice Luke Fancini recently used his skill and training to enable the school’s youngest pupils to access their teaching space much more easily, by building a wall and step leading to the Reception classroom.

To celebrate his excellent work, Stratford MP Nadhim Zahawi visited the school where he met with Luke, along with his employers at Team Xero construction contractors, to chat to him about his fine craftsmanship and his career aspirations.

National Apprenticeship Week 2015 is being held 9 – 13 March. It celebrates apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

Nadhim is passionate about the fantastic training apprenticeships offer. “My dream is that young people will be as excited when they get an apprenticeship as they would be if they got an offer from Oxford or Cambridge. They offer careers rather than just jobs. Stratford College is doing a tremendous job. I’m more than happy to come here to support Luke. It took him five hours to complete the job. It would have taken me five months!”

Luke is delighted with his apprenticeship training: “Apprenticeships really develop your skills while still giving you good pay. Working with the College has been really good. They’ve been very helpful and I’ve gained confidence going on site for jobs and meeting new people.”

Piers Harding, Director at Team Xero in Wellesbourne, explained, “As our business was growing, we needed to take on a new member of the team. We wanted to give this opportunity to a young person; someone who we could help train and develop.

New to apprenticeships, we approached Stratford College for advice and the college was extremely helpful and supported us through the entire recruitment process.

Although Luke has only been with us since February, he is enthusiastic and hard-working and we know that he is going to be of benefit to the business.

In fact the whole experience so far has been so positive that we are already looking into the feasibility of recruiting another apprentice.”
