British Nuclear Medicine Society Celebrates 50 years with an anniversary book release…
The British Nuclear Medicine Society will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Society during its Annual Spring Meeting in Birmingham. To mark the occasion BNMS have published a book “A History of the Development of Radionuclide Studies in the UK” recording the research of pioneers in nuclear medicine, bringing together the history and scientific achievements in the UK over the past 50 years and more. Nuclear medicine covers medical diagnostic investigational and therapeutic use of ‘unsealed’ radionuclides.
The BNMS has been instrumental in promoting the use of radionuclide techniques in the investigation of pathology through education, research and guidelines on the optimum use of radiation in patients. The future of Nuclear Medicine is bright with improved imaging resolution, new radiopharmaceuticals and new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures many coming from the UK. BNMS invites you to join the society, participate and take this vision forward.
It is 50 years since a group of pioneering nuclear medicine physicians came together at the Prince Alfred pub in Queensway, London to discuss how to take nuclear medicine forward in the UK- and the British Nuclear Medicine Society (BNMS) was born. Since the first use of radionuclides for patient treatment in 1948 Nuclear Medicine showed a great potential to unravel the physiological processes in health and disease. During the relatively short 50 year period since the BNMS was founded, there has been immense changes and advances in the speciality; from a scientific curiosity to becoming an indispensable diagnostic and therapeutic tool. The BNMS has been the hub for this highly motivated multidisciplinary group of people which from the start included physicians, scientists, physicists, radio pharmacists, practitioners and nurses. This book is a timely collection of articles outlining the scientific advances in Nuclear Medicine told by the pioneers themselves. The book is a journey through these exciting times and it is also a collection of personal narratives, telling us the story of these exciting years by those who have themselves been instrumental in advancing and shaping nuclear medicine.
The BNMS Annual Spring Meeting will take place at the fantastic ICC venue in Birmingham from 17th – 19th April 2016. Hosting over 500 international delegates with 90 invited speaker both from the UK and overseas. The launch of the book will take place at the Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony.
